Illustrated with humorous drawings of children, parents and family life, this handbook contains descriptions and instructions on how to apply all of the parenting skills and strategies that are taught in the program.
Parents learn about the numerous things they can do to for and on behalf of their children, which helps them gain a deeper appreciation of all of their contributions and responsibilities.
They learn how the value of raising children to be "bien educados" operates in their family and how the program is designed to help them bring out more of the behaviors of their children that are reflective of this important family value.
Parents are taught how to use "effective praise," "show and tell" and the "first/then" parenting skills to bring out in their children more of the respectful behaviors they see as a reflection of children who are "bien educados." They also learn to use "mild social disapproval,""systematic ignoring" and "time out" skills for managing 'mal educados" behaviors. A very helpful "point system" is also provided for stimulating a variety of cooperative behaiors at the same time.
The handbook also teaches that there are a variety of expectations about the roles of mothers, fathers, sons and daughters that are related to Latino family traditions which need to be considered in light of what their children are confronting in the United States.
The different types of adjustments which Latino families make to life in the United States are also explored with an orientation that it is wise to see those adjustments in terms of their impact on what parents expect of their children. Parents further learn about the various causes of child behavior, which helps them to determine how they should respond to their children.
Altogether parents learn a philosophy of positive parenting that is grounded in Latino cultural traditions and a set of very practical parenting skills. All of this learning is made even more culturally relevant because it is taught with the use of Latino proverbs or "dichos" to ground the curriculum in the poetry of the ancestors.
